Entry Requirements

For PGCE with QTS routes:

  • Achievement of at least a 2:2 and preferably a 2:1 honours degree (or a recognised equivalent).
  • You must have GCSE English Language and Mathematics at Grade C/ Grade 4, or above. Applicants must also have Grade C/4, or above for Science.
  • Successful completion of the Professional Skills Test in Literacy and Numeracy. This is a pre-entry requirement: tests must be passed before the start of the course.
  • A completed DBS enhanced disclosure which is deemed satisfactory by the SCITT.
  • A medical report which is deemed satisfactory.

For QTS only routes:

  • As above, however a third class undergraduate degree (or a recognised equivalent) or above.
  • Please note, careful consideration will be given to the subject of any third class degree to ensure rigour of transferable subject knowledge required to teach the primary national curriculum.

In addition we recommend:

  • That you take the opportunity to gain recent school experience; this can be in a voluntary capacity if you do not currently work in education. This will enable you to gain a real insight into the role of a teacher.
  • That you have a good personal academic record at secondary education and beyond and are familiar with a range of IT skills
  • That you seek a strong recommendation from an appropriate referee who is aware of the challenges of a primary school. This will not necessarily be an academic tutor. It may for example be a Head teacher/Senior member of staff from your school experience who can comment on your work with children.

The interview process

Victoria Academies Teacher Training uses a two stage interview process for candidates called to interview, normally held on two separate days. It may be possible to hold both interviews on the same day for candidates who need to travel further or candidates who will find attending interview for two half days particularly difficult. Please email the SCITT for advice if this is a concern.

Stage one

The first stage of this process will consist of written audits in English and Mathematics, together with an informal information giving session about the SCITT. The written audits assess whether each candidate’s personal subject knowledge in English and Mathematics is from a secure base to underpin high quality teaching of these subjects in the primary school. This means the audits serve a different purpose and are of a different design to the professional skills tests.

Stage two

The second stage of the interview process will involve a combination of tasks including:

  • a presentation
  • a task working with a small group of early primary or primary pupils
  • a formal interview

Each part of the selection procedure will be graded to agreed criteria. The interview questions will be largely based on elements that will contribute to the Teachers’ Standards.

Qualities we are looking for

A commitment to undertake teacher training is a major step. As such we feel it is important applicants make this commitment based on a first hand understanding of the pressures and rewards of working within the primary setting. All applicants are therefore strongly encouraged to gain relevant and recent experience in a primary school to support their application. Reference to this experience within your application will enhance your personal statement through the understanding you will have gained about teaching within the primary setting.

Good communication skills

Good communication skills are at the heart of effective teaching and all applicants are expected to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills – both written and verbally.

Good role models

We aim to recruit a range of positive role models representative of the local population, particularly from minority ethnic communities and men. We also value the experience of career changers and are keen to hear from experiences classroom assistants. Our trainees have come from a diverse set of backgrounds with a range of prior experience. Some trainees come straight from university, whilst others have had different careers and we aim to meet the needs of all trainees.

Tuition fees 2018 to 2019

Tuition Fees for 2018-19 are £9000.

You do not have to pay for your course upfront. You can apply for a loan to cover the cost of your tuition, which you only start to pay back when you are earning over £21,000 a year.

However, if you do not wish to take a tuition fee loan, you can pay your own tuition fee in full.

What financial help can I get?

Tuition fee loan

Tuition fee loans are available to help pay the cost of your tuition fees. They are paid directly to Victoria Academies Teacher Training SCITT on your behalf. You can apply for a tuition fee loan up to the full cost of the tuition fee from Student Finance England. Tuition fee loans are not repayable until you are earning over £21,000 a year.If you are an EU student from outside the UK, you can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan if you meet certain conditions.

Maintenance grant

You can apply for a Maintenance Grant to help with living costs. Maintenance Grants are paid into your bank account at the start of each term. You dont have to pay it back but any funds you will get reduce the Maintenance Loan you can get.

Maintenance loan

You can apply for a Maintenance Loan to help with living costs. Maintenance Loans are paid into your bank account at the start of each term. The exact amount you can borrow depends on your household income, where you live and what help you get through the maintenance grant. For 2018-19 you can receive upto £7,097 if you live at home and upto £8,430 if you live away from home.

Training Bursary

To encourage high quality trainees into primary teaching the following financial incentives are available for 2018-19 . You do not need to apply for a Training Bursary as they will be automatically processed by Victoria Academies Teacher Training SCITT. Applicants with a 1st class degree or PhD are eligible to receive £3,000.

Council tax

As a full time student you can apply for council tax reduction / exemption. This depends on who lives in your household. You will need an official letter to apply, which is given to you by Victoria Academies Teacher Training SCITT when you begin the course. Please tell me more about students and council tax.

Other financial support

Disabled Students can apply for extra financial support through Disabled Students Allowances (DSAs). These grants are paid in addition to the standard student finance package. They do not depend on income and do not have to be repaid.

If you have child or adult dependants you can apply for extra financial support. These are in the  form of the Adult Dependants’ Grant, Childcare Grant and Parents Learning Allowance.

For 2018-19 Student Finance you can apply from early 2018 at Student Finance England.

How do I repay it?


You will not start to make repayments of your tuition fee loan and your living cost loan until you are earning over £21,000 a year. If your income falls below £21,000 your repayments stop until you start earning over £21,000 again. You repay 9% of your income above £21,000. The amount you pay depends on how much you earn. For example, if your salary is £25,000 a year, you pay nine per cent of £4,000, which is £6.92 a week. Tuition fee loans and maintenance loans are added together and a single repayment will be deducted from your salary, normally through the tax system.
